I cannot find how to exit a rom/emulator on my Freeplay Zero. I googled it and it said Retropie uses Start+Select to press at the same time. That does not work.
How can I set/change this?

The hotkey is the power slider button. Slide it once to activate hotkeys and I think hotkey+start will take u out of roms. For more info read the readme file on freeplaytech.com, where the sd images are located.

By the way, you can set the hotkey to something else by redefining the button configuration. I don't recall exactly what it's called in RetroPie offhand. It's like Configure Controller or something like that.
