Well, ideally you'd drill a smaller hole for these new caps. Then, the bottom part of the cap would fit into the hole and the top would mushroom out over the hole to hide any imperfections. If you have the holes already cut for the normal caps, they will be a bit too large and allow the button shaft to tip or wobble. That may not give the feel you want.

Get an LED. 0603 will be pretty tricky to solder to if it's not part of the footprint of a PCB. If you're talking about using a PCB with an LED mounted, that'd work well. A through-hole radial LED would probably be easiest.

Then, get a range of resistors: 330, 1k, 5k, and 10k ohm.

Put a 330ohm resistor in series with the LED, and hook it up to VCC/GND. See how bright it is. If it's too bright, try the 1k (and so on). Once it's the proper brightness, just hot glue it where you want it and run wires over to it, I guess.

If you want to get fancy, you could switch the GND connection to an unused GPIO pin and write some code to turn it off/on at specific times. Smile

Oh I'm not afeard. I just got done hand soldering $600 of platinum filament that's 1/10 the width of a human hair for a scientific instrument. It's the next-worst thing I've ever hand-soldered and it was because we didn't have a budget to contract out. I never ever ever want to do that again. 0603 under a magnifying light or a microscope is easy peasy in comparison.

Heh! You're like my colleague, Andrew. It seems like he'd rather solder together some surface mount components for testing something instead of some easy through-hole parts. That's fine with me, until I have to modify it and it falls apart. Tongue I'm fine under the microscope, but my eyes are nowhere near as good as they used to be after way too many years of staring at a CRT all day.

Then, by all means, go for the 0603 there. I still don't know how you'll mount it and hook it up, but maybe it can just be some double-stick tape, since the 0603 LED+resistor will be super light and small.
