Full Version: Joystick Driver Chip not found CM3 Build

No matter what I do I can't seem to get the pi to recognize that I have the joysticks installed. I used the slim boxy pixel build and the triggers work perfectly but for whatever reason, my joysticks have no input despite being soldered and set up. I've tried following all the guides for setup on the tutorials from this website plus this video on setting up the config file.

The main thing that stands out to me is the "Chip not found" part. I have no idea how to resolve this and can't find anything online for it. 

Any help on figuring out what to do with this would be greatly appreciated.

I thought the issue was that I did not have the joystick driver, so I went and installed it from the retropie menu. Now none of my inputs work.

So, in your 'dmesg' output, it's the "mk_arcade_joystick_rpi:" lines that are of interest.

The "chip not found" messages are when it's trying to find the analog chips. Are you using an analog add-on board? Are you trying to do analog at all? You said that you're installing joysticks, so I assume that means analog sticks. The buttons, dpad, shoulders, etc all use digital GPIO on the Raspberry Pi. The analog inputs use analog to digital chips that are on the i2c bus. So, your output shows that it's not finding these chips. Can you show some photos of the analog add-on board and how its soldered to the main board and how the joysticks are soldered to the add-on board?

The troubling part of your dmesg is actually the last line.
"[ 521.511139] mk_arcade_joystick_rpi: Exiting"

The number at the front is the timestamp. SO, it looks like the joystick driver is booting up fine and then after 511 seconds it exits. Perhaps this is when you tried to install a driver from the RetroPie menu?

Anyway, you already had the driver installed. Installing a new driver seems to have caused your driver to unload.

I think that you (most likely) have something soldered incorrectly (or not making good contact) and it can't find the ADC (analog to digital converter) chips.
Oh, and maybe post the output from this command:

Here's a link to some photos of the build. I don't believe the soldering is the issue here because with a different SD card I'm running a fresh install of the Freeplay_CM3_Test-Retropie-4620051302 img and it will register all of my inputs using the analog sticks during setup and give the proper outputs of those, but it won't save that setup due to what I believe is the same driver issue that Weasel27 mentioned in their post "L2/r2 add on board error" which is strange to me.

The image giving these outputs is the Freeplay_CM3-and-Zero2_Test img, which so far was the only one that would natively work with my wifi adapter from Edimax.

I'd given up on the CM3 and Zero2 img since it won't register the chips and also doesn't have the brightness controller that the CM3Test4.6 has. It's been a rough back and forth between them both having different issues.

I can try resoldering it too if still looks like it might be an issue.

Trying the command i2cdetect -y 1 using the CM3 4.6 img simply states that the command was not found. I believe the driver isn't loaded.

This makes me wonder if the i2c isn’t turned on on that image. That seems odd. In the main menu under retro pie I think there is some thing like raspi-config.

In there, there would be something like interfaces and then i2c that you could turn on.

I’m just on my phone right now, but if you can find that you might want to turn it on and then reboot.
Wasn't sure exactly which image you were referring to so I armed it on both and it didn't change either response. Cm3 4.6 says command not found and Cm3+Zero2 gives the same empty lines.

Interestingly, while in the retropie-setup menu I was constantly getting a left input cycling through the menu options on the CM3+Zero2 img but not on the Cm3 4.6 img. Could be an issue with one of the contacts there, so I will end up resoldering this thing later.
