  Trial and Beta software
Posted by: Morden - 02-24-2012, 03:30 AM - Forum: General - Replies (11)

Since this didn't really belong among the links I posted in the homebrew section, I'm creating a new topic, even though there might be too little content here to justify one. Oh well.

I was browsing through my bookmarks to check if I had more homebrew links and I found this list, which I completely forgot about. It's in Japanese, but it might be of interest to those still hunting down trial cartridges, etc.

- > Neo Geo Pocket Trial Cartridges

The website lists several trial versions which you'd find on display in game stores in Japan. The author also mentions that stores would have to return these cartridges to SNK and were not allowed to keep or sell them under any condition.

I know that about a third of those got dumped and I thought the link might be of interest to some, since it has the cartridge labels and there are comments which explain the differences between trial and retail releases [lack of intros, fewer gameplay modes, the word "trial" on the start screen, etc.].

There are also several beta versions that have been dumped [some of them relatively recently]. The list below comes from No-Intro.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Pocket Adventure (World) (Beta)
SNK vs. Capcom - Gekitotsu Card Fighters (Japan) (Beta)
SNK vs. Capcom - Gekitotsu Card Fighters - SNK Supporter Version (Japan) (Beta)
Puzzle Bobble Mini (Japan, Europe) (En,Ja) (Beta)
Neo Cherry Master Color - Real Casino Series (World) (En,Ja) (Beta)
King of Fighters R-2 (World) (En,Ja) (Beta)
Densha de Go! 2 on Neo Geo Pocket (Japan) (Beta)

I am curious of the differences between, let's say, Sonic the Hedgehog Trial and Beta versions. I'm also wondering if there's a single Neo Geo Pocket game that wasn't released, but exists in a form of a ROM image. Other, more popular systems, have dozens of those, but I haven't seen anything like that for the Neo Geo Pocket.

P.S. - A while ago I read through the bashfest of a thread on the Assembler boards involving Dion Dakis. I saw Flavor asking him about unreleased NGP games, but I don't think he ever answered. Too bad, really. On the other hand, NGP games, even betas, aren't worth that much money, so they might have been of no or very little interest to him.

Custom NGPC Game Hack - AKA my geeky way to ask someone out!
Posted by: NiN^_^NiN - 02-22-2012, 09:00 PM - Forum: General - Replies (30)

First off I would like to say thank you to Flavor for making me a Flash Cart and being helpful with helping me make this idea a reality.

So I have someone I care deeply about and want to show them just how much I like them so I thought of an idea.

Why not have a custom game created to help me ask them out?

So they has a NGPC (Camo Blue) and one of their favourite games is Magical Drop (Personal favourite as well) so I thought it would be great to see if it was possible to modify the game to do what I needed.

First thing was I didn't like the idea of using a PC and a emulator to do it I wanted a more personal touch so I was researching how to build flash carts and I came across Flavors cart and saw he had some being made so I sent him an email explaining what I would like to do and if he would be willing to help and he said yes.

So currently Flavor is making a flash cart and will be putting it into a game cart case but won't be drilling a hole for the switch.

My plan is to create a custom label for the cart and to design a game box to be printer onto glossy cardboard and it will be cut and folded to house the game like it was a proper game.

So while Flavour is doing the main part for me I have started on hacking the Magical Drop rom and working out how to make it work for my needs.

I posted a small How-To in the software section of this forum in case anyone liked this idea and wanted to make it themselves.

http://forum.freeplaytech.com/showthread...d=38#pid38

So I have modified most of the graphics and I might only have one more left to change.

My main part now is to create a story line to replace the intro story and all the conversations each character has before and after a battle. This will take a while as each character responds differently to whichever character you selected as your player so i will have to modify 8 story lines in total for each 8 characters and I will have to do a lot of testing on the emulator (So glad it has save states i haven't tested them though)

I wanted to show you all my progress and see what you think about this idea.

Now game play wise I changed one of the drops to a love heart and the symbol when you get a drop that gets rid of all the drops at the same time.

Now the reason I didn't make the love heart red was cause the animation that happens when you get the special drop to remove all of the same drops was too small to modify.

I have left the other symbols as is cause they mean something to us. I will be making a booklet explaining the game play and also what each symbol on the drops means.

I still have a lot of work to do still but this is where I am so far what do you guys and girls think?

  Accessories for the NGPC
Posted by: mugenmidget - 02-18-2012, 08:49 AM - Forum: General - Replies (14)

I've really been enjoying the NGPC, especially with the help of your flash cart. Smile We ended up buying a second unit for multiplayer, but it took us a while to find a link cable. vlame on the Racketboy forums got us in touch with Yoshimitsu at GameTZ, who sold us an official NGPC link cable for $10.

The second unit we bought was also in somewhat rough shape, with a scratched up screen and a missing AA battery door. The batteries seem to stay in there well enough without it (and tape could always help support them), but I wondered if maybe a market for replacement battery doors existed? It'd certainly be cool if we could purchase them from somewhere.

I'd also like to pick up an AC adapter, from what I understand the official case used to come with one? Is there a cheap place to get an adapter these days? We're just using camera cases for our NGPCs at the moment.

Finally, does anyone have recommendations on screen protectors? On Racketboy, user sneth recommended buying generic screen protector sheets and cutting them to fit the NGPC. I'll probably go that route at some point, I've actually ordered some DS Lite screen protectors for cheap from DealExtreme.com that I'm going to try to use. I also heard that at one point people used to sell entire replacements of screen cover, is there any way to get those still?

Sorry for all the random thoughts. Big Grin Thanks for making these forums, I look forward to reading more.

I'll start this off with this site I found a week or two ago.

It's got a collection of animated game startup screenshots. Here's an example.

  Favorite Game

What's your favorite NGPC game?

I'd have to say that Cardfighters Clash (1 and 2) are mine.

Faselei! would be second.

Biomotor Unitron would probably be third.
