With the GPA boards, would it be possible to add your own custom extra buttons?

Somewhat. I think all the GPIO are used up on the Raspberry Pi Zero. You could switch to a chip-based solution like the MCP23017. That would allow for more buttons, but it would be a bit tricky to implement.

Cool, that actually looks reasonably possible. Maybe an expansion thing to look into later on after doing the base build.
