I want to hard wire a wifi / Bluetooth module on the board do I have to use a usb splitter or can I just connect the wires to the 5v, ground, D+, D- ?

Do you want to be able to also use the external USB socket for other USB peripherals?

Then you must use a USB hub chip. Have you seen posts/videos from people that have added one?
