Yeah, Dual-Tile Encoding. Essentially, it can half the space needed, because (instead of encoding one byte per letter) it encodes pairs of letters. You could then have your tileset already optimized for pairs of letters, or you could have a routine that unpacked the pairs into individual letters. Either way, it would take a lot more work to hack in the new routines to do this new functionality.
