WS Flash Masta v4.4 (early adopter version)
#91
No problem, so do you think the only solution for problematic games will be new patches or are you still working on a firmware/hardware update for them?

Games like Beatmania, Guilty Gear, One Piece and Detective Conan are really system and flashcart buyers for me, and there are some others that would be hard to play without saving ^^

I do know that Beatmania is (as far as I know the only game that is) too large for a slot. We consciously made the decision to offer 16 64mbit slots instead of 8 128mbit slots. This, however, is likely something that could be fixed in firmware.

As for the others, my gut says patches are the only real workaround.

Hey there everyone. Digmac from AG checking in to say how much the WS Flashmasta rocks! Just had a question on my second day using the cart.

1. I saw in your YT video Flavor, that you had a MicroSD inserted into your adopter WS Flashmasta. My question is, do you have some sort of software in testing that is able to use this function, or were you just showing off the slot on the cart?

2. This is more of a suggestion. I would make the MicroSD function of the cart limited to simply save data handling. We have an easy enough time loading the games through USB, and I would say that MicroSD save management with customizable save names for the files would be much better. This would give us a save state sort of function if you will, and I think would be a more efficient use of the slot than actual game loading. 15 slots is quite a bit and stores games that would take days to beat anyway.

I am trying to see if I could cut up a casing for a WS game and actually get the top cover to fit on the flashmasta for protection while gaming. Sometimes my fingers rest where the cart will go, and I don't feel like resting my fingers on this bare PCB. Right now I'll have to punch a hole large enough to fit the battery and cut away the plastic for the USB, but I think it might just work with those mods in place and perhaps some more general cutting of the internal supports that hold the PCB in place.

Anyway, thanks Flavor for all the work and time you put into this thing. You deserve every last cent you get, man.

This depends on your view of "software in testing" I guess. I have a USB "linker" that I use to act like a WonderSwan so I can test code running on the computer and how I can interact with the cartridge. Is is fairly easy to debug things this way. Through this interface, I can read and write the SD card. So, this proves that the SD card is usable from the WonderSwan cartridge socket.

The problem is that we have yet to get this working on the actual WonderSwan. I do not yet know why it works in one place and not the other.

This is very likely what we will focus on first. I feel like if users could use 15 slots and backup/restore savegame data for each of those, then most features after that are icing in a way. I don't mean to say that we want to stop there, but savegame is a priority.

I have also wondered if there would be a way to "wrap" the PCB to protect it. Tape would be ugly and sticky, but I wonder if there's another way to cover it.

Yeah, I'd love to get a proper plastic shell for this. I've said it before, but my expertise is not in 3D modeling or creating parts like that.

FYI, I have added a new menu ROM at http://www.flashmasta.com/software-downloads/
This one is for testing, and it now includes a database of game names. Please let me know how it works for you.

Just flash that onto your first slot, and it should replace the older menu. You can make a backup of the old one first if you want the option of going back.

Going to flash this on there ASAP. Will let you know the results.

EDIT: Works perfectly. Much improved over the previous menu. Boots all the games I chose with the correct names. Many thanks Flavor.

Alright. I've got some news. After quite a while of sanding, drilling, and cutting, I've got a front cover for the WS Flashmasta. It's really rough, and just gives an idea at this point. Flavor, let me know if this would help you design a case for this.

I sacrificed a Harobots cart to make this up. RIP Harobots cart.

How do you attach it to the circuit board?

Literally, I don't. You can bend the sides out a little bit and it'll stay in place over the board. I dont know yet how to attach it in any way. The way the board is right now, I cant see any way to attatch something like this. I just hacked up the front of an existing WS cart. I cant see any way to mod the back of a WS casing to fit this. This just gives us possible dimensions and a proof of concept sort of deal as to a casing for this.

Well, it's possible that we could fit a few mounting holes on a future revision of the WS Flash Masta. That might allow people to 3D print their own covers. That wouldn't be a proper case/shell, but it could be something like what you're doing. Countersinking such holes could be a pain, though.

Another option would be to make the Flash Masta cart PCB a tiny bit longer to give a case something to attach to. I'm not sure people want their cart sticking out, though.
