Image Questions
#1
Hey forum,

Just got my kit yesterday, put it together today, once I get the custom glass for it I’ll post up a pic.

Anyway on to my questions. I thought of emailing Ed but maybe it could prove more useful to ask here.

I see Ed post on where to get images:

There is a GPA one, but the Freeplay Zero one should work well.

I just don’t know which image to use. The latest one even if it’s configured formCM3 or the latest one with Freeplay Zero in the title?

I’m having a hard time setting up my WiFi, read the read me file but still seems unclear. I’m running a Mac without access to a HDMI monitor to connect the Pi so I can’t use a keyboard, usb stick, mouse, etc.

Does it have the latest RetroPie software that came out?

Is it pretty easy/straight forward to add a custom splash and menu theme with my setup?

How do I add Roms? I just found the GitHub post for retropie but I don’t know how applicable suggestions are on there. Instructions on putting Roms in via WiFi would be super appreciated!

Sorry for all the questions, I’m a total n00b with the Pi, but I’m stoked and hope this helps answer not only my questions but others who might be in the same boat. Thanks!

Man, it's Friday night, and people must be receiving/building their Freeplay Zero.  I've had a few different people asking questions in the last hour or so.

Did you contact me about the glass yesterday? I'm pretty sure we checked/doublechecked the ones we shipped out this week. It's possible that we could have missed one, but all the Kickstarter orders should have had glass included. Is there any chance it was tucked inside a paper or anything weird like that?

Yeah, this is a good place for them!

Yeah, I can understand why this is confusing. The Freeplay CM3 image is optimized for the Pi 2, Pi 3, and CM3. It has software compiled specifically for those CPUs. It won't work on the Pi Zero (Freeplay Zero).

Where it gets more confusing is that the Pi Zero image will actually run on the CM3. It just isn't optimized. It's kinda like the CM3 is backwards compatible.

Anyway, the answer is:
If you're on a Freeplay CM3, use the CM3 image (but the Zero image will technically work).
If you're on a Freeplay Zero, use the Zero image.

By the way, RetroPie does the same thing, but they call the images "0/1" and "2/3" for which Pi they run on.

If you're setting up WiFi, I will assume that you are using a Raspberry Pi Zero W.

There are 3 main ways to do this.
1) If you have a USB keyboard, it's probably easiest to use the "RetroPie" menu and select WiFi. You can go through the menu with the controller or the Keyboard. Once you select a network, you will need the keyboard to enter the password.
2) Put your SD card into your Mac. You will notice a drive called "boot." In there, add a file called wpa_supplicant.conf
Actually, just see this article: https://howchoo.com/g/ndy1zte2yjn/how-to...t-ethernet
(note that I didn't need the "ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev" stuff when I did it before)
RetroPie should grab/use that file on the next boot.
3) You can do something very similar to item #2, but use it slightly differently.
Put your SD card into your Mac. You will notice a drive called "boot." In there, add a file called wifikeyfile.txt
See: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Set...a-keyboard
With this method, after adding/editing the file, you still need to go into the WiFi menu from the RetroPie menu and tell it to use that file you created.

I think it's current, unless they released something new in the last couple weeks that I missed. We have been pretty swamped recently, though. I could have missed that.

Yes. See https://github.com/retropie/retropie-set...lashscreen or check Google/YouTube. There are different ways to get this set up, and it depends on how custom you want it.

I prefer the USB Stick method. I also have used the SFTP method wit FileZilla. I think that the image we provide has the Samba method turned off, because it takes extra time to boot the machine with that turned on.

Don't worry about it. This is good information to have on the forum!

Yeah, I got in after my double last night stoked because I got a package from you and I had the day off today! Had to stop midway but just finished it not to long ago.

No, I got my ks glass, I was referring to custom colored glass I ordered.

Saw that you posted an new image -- "Freeplay Zero 17111701", I'm downloading it right now

I don't see wpa_supplicant.conf but I'm downloading the new image, and gonna read those links tonight as I go to bed. I guess I'll have to show off Sunday instead of tomorrow...I ran out of time

I shall, thanks for all the great info, plenty of stuff to check out before another session hopefully tomorrow night.

I should have gotten that microUSB-to USB then... I might have a cable like that floating around. i'll look.

Thanks again for the quick update! Plenty of good sources and info. If I don't come back with more questions, I'll definitely come back to show up my build!

I’m sorry that I don’t have extra time to elaborate, but I think you may have received a micro USB to USB adapter in the kit of accessories (button caps, drill guide, etc). You could use that to hook up your USB stick.

The wpa_supplicant.conf file won’t be there. I think that whenever you create it, it gets moved elsewhere on the next boot. You have to create it and then boot the machine.

With the wifikeyfile.txt option, you create it, boot up, use the RetroPie/WiFi menu, and then tell it to grab the info from that file.

No Ed, you do a lot and have been super helpful even before I supported the KS. I must have overlooked that there. Thanks for including it in the kit.

I figured that out after re-reading your post. It's gonna be a fun time learning this system out. Thanks again for everything!

Merry Christmas Everyone,

I've got a question about the advance SD image. I've updated retropie and now my controls don't work anymore I've also done the reinstall from the readme file but that didn't fix it. Any ideas?

I've notice that the advance SD image is now move to an archive folder on the gdrive, does that mean I can now just use the zero image that's in the main folder? I have a zero w...

Thanks

Yeah. You can just use the Freeplay Zero image. The readme file that’s in with the SD images also tells you how to fix the controller problem that pops up when you upgrade. You need to use ‘dkms’ to build/install the driver.

Ok thanks,

by the way these commands didn't work for me! The script says 0.1.5.5 is not found. I've looking in the folder and found 0.1.5.4 so I used that instead. But it still did not fix the controls.

dkms build -m mk_arcade_joystick_rpi -v 0.1.5.5
dkms install -m mk_arcade_joystick_rpi -v 0.1.5.5

I'm gonna flash the sdcard again and try again.

By-the-way for this I used the adv pi wifi image (the one now located in archive).

You might not want to use 0.1.5.4, since there were some improvements in 0.1.5.5. I heard from one other guy that said it was missing after updating. I don't know why that might happen. I still plan to update and release a new image soon.

In the meantime, you can grab it from github.

It's at: https://github.com/TheFlav/mk_arcade_joystick_rpi

This is somewhat from memory, but I think you'd do this:
cd /home/pi/Freeplay/
git clone https://github.com/TheFlav/mk_arcade_joystick_rpi.git
cd mk_arcade_joystick_rpi
./install.sh
