Battery options UK
#1
I've just received my kit, and have ordered a GBA shell off ebay.

I'm now onto selecting the right battery for the system.

Option 1
14500 3.7v Lithium Batteries 52.4mm*14.4mm*14.4mm
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0721JYBQL/r...il_2?psc=1

Option 2
1300mAh Lithium Polymer (meant for a TomTom GPS) 62mm*39mm*5mm
http://cpc.farnell.com/enix-energies/gps...dp/BT05897

I like the idea of using option 1 as it'll look how the GBA was built, but I've read on here it could be a tight fit.

although option 2 looks like it could have longer life as at 5mm thick I could get 2 of them in, assuming they aren't too long. But have no idea if it has any charging protection built in (how big a deal is this?)

I'm trying to work with what's freely available locally, rather than ordering from china as I'd like to finish my build this side of Christmas.

Anyone got any thoughts or suggestions?

Cheers

Mike

I don’t really know what’s available in the UK. We have some batteries available at https://www.freeplaytech.com/shop/ that you could at least use for comparisons.

I’d recommend flat cells that are less than 30mm x 50mm. You can go a little bit longer with some extra plastic removal. Maybe you could go up to 55 mm and still maintain most of the battery compartment.

If you want to use 14500 cells, you will need to wire them in parallel. We used to do this for our early design of the Game Pie Advance.

Thanks for the tips.

So the GPS battery is out, based on it's dimensions.

Had a look at the ones in the store, can't see any dimensions listed, but they look like the ones I can get off ebay (via china).

How about this one:

3.7V 600mAh 2.22Wh Li-Ion Battery
http://cpc.farnell.com/gbl/gb043048/batt...dp/BT04865
31mm*50mm*4mm

It's only 600mAh, but the dimensions look about right.

Or I can gamble on these making it on time from China (look like the ones you are selling in the store)

2 x 3.7V 1000mAh Li Po Battery
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-pcs-3-7V-10...2338745786
30mm*50mm*7.5mm

Actually thinking about it, I'll place the order for the Chinese ones. Fingers crossed they get here before Christmas.

So the batteries I've ordered don't look to come with the connectors included.

Is it the JST PH 2.0 connector I'd need to get hold of?

Like these amzon link? or these farnell link

Those 753050 batteries should work well, but (yes) you would want to add the JST connectors. First of all, be very careful that you solder them on properly (red/black, +/-). There should be information about what is correct in our build documentation.

In the UK, maybe I would look at these: https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/jst-2-wire-assembly
Adafruit also sells them and is carried by several different distributors. Maybe just Google "adafruit jst ph".

The 2 links you posted both appear to be correct. I'm not sure if the Farnell one comes with the actual pins, and if you'd have the proper crimp tool to do them yourself.

Maybe one of these?
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Liter-en...0.0.CCDycZ

10x30x48 mm

I have ordered one, but it has not arrived so can’t be 100% sure but it’s the closest I could find.

Cheers!

Thanks for the link to the JST wires, you were right the Farnell ones don't have any pins. I've just ordered a set today after my batteries finally turned up yesterday.
