Aspect ratio
#1
I'm relatively new to the whole Raspberry Pi scene, and just finished my FPZ build. I was curious if there is a way to fix the aspect ratio of the games I'm playing that I'm just missing. Right now, my NES games are being stretched and it just doesn't look natural to me. Launching a game, I access the configuration, and change it there, but any time I switch to something other than the default, the screen just goes black but there is sound playing.  Basically, I'm trying to find a way to pillarbox the games so they are running at the correct width. Thank you in advance for your replies.

edit: I guess I should point out, running the most recent provided RetroPie build, and have tried the aspect ratio on all three of the NES emulators.

Are you using the SD card image we provide, phoenixcaptain? I thought that it was set properly on there, but it may not apply to all emulators (and I may be wrong that it was set properly).

I don't think you want to set a resolution in the "runcommand" menu (which is the menu that comes up if you press a button while launching a game). It sounds like that is what you are attempting to do.

What you want to do is set the aspect ratio inside of the emulator (if you want to change a specific emulator).

I can't run through it on a FPZ here right at the moment, so this will be a bit incomplete. Maybe I can get the exact steps later.

While running a game, tap/release the power button and then tap/release the X button. That'll get you into the emulator's menu. In there, you should find something like CONFIGURATION maybe. Then maybe VIDEO. You want to find the item that shows the aspect ratio and set that.

In fact, it seems that there's a different (maybe easier) way to do it, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=170L41QpImE

I am using that SD image. It could also be with my fiddling around, I messed up one of the default settings on accident and caused just a snowball effect. You are correct, I was doing it through the runcommand menu. I'll have to open up the FPZ to see if that works, or just follow that video. I kinda... chopped off the x and y, so I need to go in and edit the hotkeys if that is possible.

Thank you for your reply. I will definitely check out that video. No need for you to have to do even more work than you've already put in!
