I have come close to completely solving my issues. I'll post my solutions just in case some one else is looking for solutions.
The power switch issue was fixed by trimming more of the plastic around the L/R buttons. Specifically the long bottom piece, hardly any of it remains on mine and it works fine now. This also improved the volume wheel issue but I think just trimming the plastic around it gave me the biggest improvement.
The A button was super simple actually. I guess I never closely examined the actual buttons because when I did I noticed a mis-formed piece of plastic on the bottom of the button. Chopping this off completely fixed the mushy feel. The D-pad still doesn't feel right but I'm still poking around.
A new issue has showed up unrelated to hardware after getting everything hooked together. After taking out the battery and tearing it down when I try to boot back up the power switch will no longer work and it will only boot through plugging the Pi into a USB cable. Once I format the card and place the .img back on the card it will boot as normal. Not sure what is causing this but its frustrating.
