Hi bezidebela!

The most likely problem that first comes to mind is that something in/around the speaker, volume wheel, headphone jack area is shorting out. Are you using an aluminum shell? If so, it's even more likely to be the problem.

The speaker itself should have had a round foam dot stuck to the back of it. This adds insulation between the speaker and anything else on the circuit board that it could come in contact with.

Next, (particularly on a metal shell) you should be snipping off any protruding pins on the backside of the volume wheel and headphone jack.
See step 4 at https://www.boxypixel.com/pages/assembly...erry-pi-cm

You will, obviously, need to open the shell to check those things. Test the sound with the shell open to see if that helps the issue.

If there is pressure on the volume wheel, it can also cause the audio to cut out.

Let us know how that works. Maybe post some photos from that area if the problem persists.

Hi! I am using the Boxy aluminum shell. I removed the board from the shell and tried it on my mat making sure there were no contacts but the sound still isn't working (won't work through either the speaker or headphone jack). I also tried to load some NES ROMs to just test it without sound but it freezes right after I try to open the NES emulator. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

Are you, by any chance, hooked up to HDMI (or HDMI was connected at bootup time) when this happens?

No. Haven't tried HDMI yet. Only really plan to use speaker/headphone jack.

Could you tell me which SD image file you are using?

At the moment, we have these 3 available:
Freeplay_CM3_Test-RetroPie-45_19080201.img.gz - This is a test of the new RetroPie 4.5. I think it's good, but it hasn't been fully confirmed, yet.
Freeplay_CM3_19061802.img.gz - RetroPie v4.4 This image is the latest that is not in testing.
Freeplay_Zero_18032101.img.gz - RetroPie v4.3 We keep this around, because some people prefer v4.3.

Hey bezidebela,

Please try one more thing and then open a support ticket.

Remove the Raspberry Pi Compute Module from the circuit board. Look at the contacts where it inserts into the socket. See if you can tell anything odd. Maybe wipe it with isopropyl alcohol if you have some. Insert the Compute Module back into the Freeplay CM3. Does this change anything?

If not, please proceed to open a SUPPORT ticket at https://www.freeplaytech.com/contact/
Just copy/paste this message of yours in there.

It worked! Never thought of reseating the CM. Thanks!
