WonderSwan v5.2: Color Only?
#11
A regular AA, yeah. Energizer. Someone else I was talking to was able to get it to work with no issues using Rayovac and Sunbeam, but I haven't been to the store yet to try other brands.

Oh, neat, it's letting me upload a .zip. Well, here's a .zip containing a .mp4 showing what happens.

When they got it to work, do you think they were using Alkaline, NIMH, Heavy Duty (zinc chloride), or something else?

Based on Danno's mention of different brands maybe working, we pulled out a bin of used batteries. The Voltage is just measured with a meter, since the batteries are used.

1.57v Sunbeam Heavy Duty - Would Not Boot
1.43v Duracell Alkaline - Would Not Boot
1.53v Kingever Carbon Energy - Would Not Boot

1.54v DGHome Alkaline - Waited for a while and then booted (like in Danno's video)
1.56v Duracell Alkaline - Seems to boot consistently, but sometimes a little slow to boot.
1.53v Energizer Alkaline - Seems to boot consistently!
1.56v Energizer Alkaline - Seems to boot consistently!
1.6v Sunbeam Alkaline - Seems to boot consistently!
1.6v Rayovac Zinc Carbon - Seems to boot consistently!
1.55v Amazon Basics Alkaline - Seems to boot consistently!

We also have another B&W WS that is much more temperamental. I assume it has some weaker capacitors or something. It won't even boot up this cartridge if we power it via our benchtop power supply.

"Definitely alkaline", they said. They also said "1.48v currently. Sunbeam alkaline." So hey, another data point! I myself have tried two Energizer alkalines like the one shown in the video clip, with the same experience both times.

This weekend I'm gonna gather up a few other brands and see if I have better luck with any of them.

EDIT:
"The other is rayovac at 1.45v"

Of course, we don't prefer that you'd have to have specific batteries to run with our cartridge, but it is likely the best workaround at the moment.

Just bought $40 worth of batteries and didn't find any that solved the problem. I've tested these, new from the package:

  • Energizer (alkaline)
  • Energizer Max (alkaline)
  • Energizer Ultimate (lithium)
  • Duracell (alkaline)
  • Rayovac Fusion (alkaline)

Of them, the Energizer Ultimate took maybe 10~15 seconds to boot, while the others are in the 20~22 second range. So there's that, I guess.

Hey Danno,

I'm sorry to hear that none of the batteries you tried helped. We are trying to get some more B&W units to test on. We currently have 2. They behave differently than each other. The batteries help on one of them. On the other, nothing seems to help.

The B&W model seems to rely more heavily on electrolytic capacitors than the color models do. My theory is that these are known to dry up over time, and maybe some B&Ws have worse capacitors than others. I don't really know that for sure, though.

We have had some phone discussions with the company that makes the MRAM chips, Everspin. Unfortunately, we have found no workaround that is easy to implement. For the time being, our current plan is to switch back to nvSRAM from Cypress to continue production.

Then, we will likely redesign part of the circuit board to make it handle this situation on the B&W console in a way that the Everspin MRAM will boot up properly.

Danno, please open a support ticket at https://www.flashmasta.com/about/contact/ and we will talk about some specific support options for you there.

Hi! I've just received my Flash Masta v5.2 Smile
But I don't seem to know how to make it work.

I've flashed some games on it, but when I turn the WSC on, only some of the right side icons show up, the rest of the screen blank.
Sometimes it seems I can select a game? Because it starts playing some music, but there's nothing on the screen.

Is it possible the WSC I've bought is busted? The listing said fully working Tongue

Would appreciate any help, I'm sure it is just some usability issue on my part

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: LMAO THERE'S A CONTRAST WHEEL SORRY for my confusion I'm new ;__;

Bownser! Big Grin I don't know what else to say. Welcome to the Wonderswan club!

Also, FYI, we just posted news that we are selling another batch of WS Flash Masta carts.

https://www.flashmasta.com/2021/03/24/ws...-and-ngpc/

For the time being, we have bit the bullet and moved back to the nvSRAM (as opposed to the MRAM). This should solve the problem with the B&W WS consoles. When we can get to a point of re-designing the circuit board, then we can move forward with the MRAM chips.

If any of you are experiencing a problem using a WS Flash Masta cart with a B&W model WS, please see my previous post in this thread. Contact us, and we'll work through the problem with you.
