My first thought was to make sure that your power button springs back (like a DS Lite). If it stays in the ON position (like a GBA), then you probably need to cut the nub off of the slider. Let me know if you think that may be an issue here.
The next thought would be that the Pi pin that is used for the power button is bridged/soldered to something else (or maybe not making a good connection).
I assume that you have batteries hooked up, but if you don't, I would recommend that you have a battery plugged in.

done some testing, hocked up a keyboard and all is fine. from the testing I did it looks like it has to do something with the A-button. As soon as i hit the A button moments after the system is shutting down.
