I don’t really know what’s available in the UK. We have some batteries available at https://www.freeplaytech.com/shop/ that you could at least use for comparisons.
I’d recommend flat cells that are less than 30mm x 50mm. You can go a little bit longer with some extra plastic removal. Maybe you could go up to 55 mm and still maintain most of the battery compartment.
If you want to use 14500 cells, you will need to wire them in parallel. We used to do this for our early design of the Game Pie Advance.
