The speaker is actually just a single channel. The headphone jack has both channels. Some people have used asound.conf settings to try to get mixed audio out of the single speaker, but I don't know what settings work properly. I think that's what you'd want to do to get it to mix the channels. The unfortunate side-effect of this approach is that the headphone output would also be mixed, then.
