The other "easy" test (to do what a-butta is suggesting) is with the circuit board out (like in the photos), you can boot it up. Just ONLY with the rubber pad, try the A and B. If the A isn't working, spin the rubber pad around 180-degrees (so it swaps the rubber of A and B). See if the problem follows the rubber or not.

You can also (fairly easily) use the START/SELECT rubber on top of the A or B pad.

What we really need to figure out is if the problem is in the rubber or if it's in the circuitry.
