charging the FPZ
#11
Okay. Let me coordinate with Andrew to see if there's anything to be done before we do all of that. We wouldn't be able to ship anything before Monday anyway.

In the meantime, could you please try a different power source? If you have another micro USB charging adapter, that'd be great. We just want to rule out any possibility that it's the charger doing something we don't expect.

It seems (from your video) that with just the batteries plugged in, the LCD doesn't light up.  It only looked like it lit up when you plugged in the MicroUSB.

That's a really weird problem.  I feel like we should get you a replacement board and have you send that board back for inspection.  Would you be okay with that?  If so, let's talk about shipping via email.

I will also talk more about this with Andrew to see if he has any other ideas to try before we ship back and forth.
Yep that's what happens. Yea I'll be more than happy to send it back if it helps you guys work out the minor bugs.

Do you put foam on the back of the display to separate it from the Freeplay Zero board?

A little update, I have used the USB port on my PC, my phone charger and the raspberry pi power cable that it came with, and all turn on my screen while charging. I do have foam separating the display from the board. But upon further inspection , I noticed when the fpz is off, and the batteries are hooked up, I hear a rapid ticking sound . I removed the pi and it goes away. But as soon as I plug it it I hear it again.

I did notice that my battery has drained from over the course of a day just sitting powered off. Maybe that's the sound I have been hearing?

I think that we will have to arrange to get you a replacement and have you ship that one back to us so we can inspect it to figure out what is going wrong.

It’s a very odd problem that we’re haven’t encountered before, but I had hoped that we could debug it remotely like this. I will actually be traveling the next two days, but we can sort this out on Monday and try to get you up and running as quick as possible.

-Rapid ticking sound
-only audible when power applied, either with batteries or plug
-Screen turns on when charging.
-Battery drains over the course of a day even when not turned on.

Any chance it could be a short?

I would double check your soldering on the GPIO pins on the Pi. That is the most likely culprit since that involves user assembly. Next I would check the board itself, especially in and around the ribbon cable. Check for scorch marks. I'm guessing something is arcing to ground that involves the display electronics.

I could be wrong and the noise is actually emanating from the speaker. I would still check all of your solder joints on the GPIO header.

-EDIT-
Got to hear the video and the sound OP was talking about. It's not arcing electricity or short. It's a very low humming noise, the kind that old TV's used to make. You can also see the LCD itself scanning left to right, but I'm not sure if it actually does this or if it's nearing the same refresh sync rate as the camera. When he turns it around you can hear the noise more prominently near the cartridge opening and not from the front where the speaker is. Is it possible the inductor or something else is making noise kind of like coil whine? That being said, coil whine would simply be a symptom of the issue.

I'm stumped. I'd say it's the LCD or the FPZ main board as I have never heard that sound out of a Pi. No way to tell without spares on hand.

Wow. I have to revisit this thread because it is now happening to me. White screen, low buzzing noise.

As far as I can tell, I bricked it changing an advanced setting in the Raspi Config menu which I accessed from within Retropie. It had worked just fine up until that point. I will try and re-flash it tonight.

As far as the low buzzing noise, I had a similar noise but I changed the mixer settings to a lower value for PCM.

I really don’t assume that these problems are related, but it would be interesting if they were.

If you can let us know which setting you changed, I’d like to test it to see what causes your issue.

You are correct. I got home and re-flashed the SD card with the OS image and it fired back up. I just found it extremely interesting that the symptoms (white screen, buzzing sound) turned out to be nearly the same as TheAngler's build. Even though the situation is different, maybe the information could relate to his situation somehow.

The setting I changed was Raspi-Config->Advanced. I'm not sure which setting it was, but it was either overscan or resolution. I thought I was entering another sub-menu to look at settings, but it seemed to enable something and require a reboot. I was wanting to see what options were available as many of the menus were simply way to small to read.
