Sound through headphones but not speaker
#1
Hi,

I finally got my compute module, and everything is running great except that I have no sound from the speaker. If I plug in headphones, they do work.

This holds true when running outside of any enclosure, so it doesn’t seem to be a shorting issue, at least as far as the case goes.

I’ve inspected all the solder joints, and they seem fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions before I start trying to reflow joints or anything else extreme?

I’m happy to post pictures when I have the chance later tonight, but everything seems fine. This is also with a fresh install using the latest, non-4.5 test image from the official google docs share.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

If you insert the headphones, you get sound, right?

Then, if you remove them, does the sound come out of the speaker after 5 seconds or so?

If audio is coming out the headphones, then I think it’s not a software issue. It could be something stuck in the headphone jack. Can you inspect that? Connect/disconnect headphones a bunch of times in a row.

Yeah, I get sound through the headphones when I plug them in.
The jack seems fine as far as I can tell.
I stripped off the speaker shrink wrap and applied voltage directly, and the speaker crackles like I’d like expect. I don’t have anything else around to test the speaker.

I also checked to voltage on the speaker pins, and there’s nothing. But I’m not sure if that’s because it’s gjust getting no signal due to the headphone jack misbehaving.

I guess maybe the next logical step could be to despiser the jack?
I don’t want to destroy any warranty/exchange option if it came to that though.

Are there any test points further up that might help to test?
My gut says it’s the jack, but I am not too knowledgeable in that area beyond it seems ok.

I’ve tried to take a couple photos down the jack, but they turned out pretty useless ?

I am trying to understand this sentence.

Are you saying that the speaker works correctly when it is outside an enclosure?

If yes... have you tried putting Kapton tape at the back of the speaker? When you close your enclosure, the speaker can touch the pcb, and there are many solder points at that location that can short something.

Please refer to steps #4 and #10 of the following guide:

Good luck!

Dansor,

I can't think of another reason this may be happening to you. Will you go to https://www.freeplaytech.com/contact/
and start a SUPPORT ticket. Just copy/paste your posts from here into the form there and select SUPPORT.

I ordered the FreePlay cm3  through RdtroModding.
Should I still go through freeplaytech, or through retromodding?

Thanks!

I would say to open the support ticket at Freeplaytech. Freeplaytech can work with RetroModding to determine who's responsibility it is, if need be.
